First Discovery in Jiangxi: Glossy Ibises Nesting and Breeding in Poyang Lake
5月22日，江西鄱阳湖国家级自然保护区吴城、沙湖保护管理站巡护员联合调查监测时，在永修县水域发现国家一级保护动物彩鹮。监测中，4只彩鹮正从农田和树林收集树枝，到水域中心树林筑巢。
On May 22, during a joint patrol and monitoring operation, rangers from the Wucheng and Shahu management stations of the Jiangxi Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve made an exciting discovery in the waters of Yongxiu County: glossy ibises, a nationally protected first-class species, were observed nesting and breeding. Four individuals were seen gathering twigs from nearby farmland and woodlands to build nests in trees located at the center of the wetland.
据保护区管理局四级调研员王小龙介绍，这是江西首次发现彩鹮筑巢繁殖。彩鹮属鹮科，羽毛在阳光下有金属光泽，被誉为“湿地彩虹”。此前因栖息地减少等因素，我国多年未观测到彩鹮，曾被宣布绝迹，2021年列为一级重点保护动物，数量稀少且分布零散，此次在鄱阳湖畔筑巢十分罕见。这一发现丰富了当地鸟类多样性认知，凸显了鄱阳湖在鸟类保护中的重要性。
According to Wang Xiaolong, a grade 4 research-Level officer with the reserve’s administration bureau, this marks the first confirmed case of glossy ibises nesting and breeding in Jiangxi Province. Belonging to the family Threskiornithidae, the glossy ibis is known for its shimmering, iridescent plumage that glows in the sunlight, earning it the nickname "wetland rainbow." The glossy ibis had not been seen in China for many years due to habitat loss and other threats. Once declared extinct in the country, the glossy ibis was reclassified as a first-class nationally protected species in 2021. Its population remains small and scattered, making this breeding event at Poyang Lake exceptionally rare and significant. This discovery not only enriches the understanding of avian biodiversity in the region but also underscores the ecological importance of Poyang Lake as a critical habitat for endangered birds.
为保护彩鹮，鄱阳湖保护区联合永修县林业局、公安局采取多项措施，包括限制人类活动、禁止破坏湿地、加强巡逻监测、开展环保教育及彩鹮知识普及等，提升公众保护意识，确保彩鹮安全繁殖。
To protect the glossy ibises, the Poyang Lake Nature Reserve, in collaboration with the Yongxiu County Forestry and Public Security Bureaus, has implemented a range of conservation measures. These include restricting human activities, prohibiting wetland destruction, enhancing patrols and monitoring, and conducting public awareness campaigns and environmental education programs about the species. These efforts aim to foster community engagement and ensure a safe and successful breeding season for the glossy ibis.
