"Thirty years ago, when I first stepped into a classroom, a veteran principal told me that Chinese language education is a mission to preserve our roots, and we are tree planters. I hope to learn more about how to sustain the warmth and cultural value of Chinese education in the digital era," said Liao Shanman, President of the Chinese Language Teachers Association of New Jersey, USA, while participating in a recent professional training program held in Ganzhou, Jiangxi.

In the height of summer, the 2025 Overseas Chinese Language Teacher Training Program, themed “Hand in Hand with Jiangxi, Bonded by Chinese Language,” commenced in Ganzhou, known as the cradle of Hakka culture. Fifty-six Chinese language teachers from 17 countries, including the United States, Spain, Vietnam, and Australia, embarked on a 14-day training journey to explore how to root overseas Chinese lessons in traditional culture while infusing them with innovation.

During this program, the organizers promoted courses that covered Chinese language fundamentals, teaching methodology, and Chinese cultural instruction. They also integrated emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), into Chinese language education practices. Additionally, participants visited Jinling School affiliated with Jiangxi University of Science and Technology to observe lesson demonstrations that showcased the convenience of AI-assisted teaching.
Chen Hong, a 65-year-old teacher from Dundas Chinese School in Sydney, was deeply moved after observing a Chinese lesson titled “Thinking of My Brothers on Mountain-Climbing Day.” He remarked, "Using AI to visualize the poet's emotions through immersive scenes made a lasting impression and helps students truly understand the poet."
Xu Meiqiong, a teacher at the Sino-Spanish Cultural and Arts School in Spain, expressed her amazement at the immersive class created with the help of AI. She said, “When students put on the AI device, they can stand virtually in front of Dunhuang murals while learning Chinese characters, watching the strokes emerge from the mural patterns, as if they were touching the cultural pulse across time and space. I am excited to learn more about AI-assisted teaching tools and techniques."
Luo Danni, a teacher from the Chinese School of the Chinese Australian Society for Mutual Benefit, shared her reflections after visiting the Fushougou Museum, Yugutai Pavilion, and the ancient city walls of Ganzhou. She said, “My roots are in China. No matter how far I’ve traveled, the cultural atmosphere here feels most familiar. I will take the experience of this trip back with me and breathe new vitality into my Chinese lessons.”
